Screenshots For Troubleshooting (App Note)

Screenshots are a common and useful tool for troubleshooting. If you're noticing an issue, don't hesitate to send us a screenshot.

How to take a screenshot on Windows

Follow the below steps to create a screenshot on Windows.

1) Copy

The image displayed on the monitor can be saved as a static image. These below options will save the image to the clip-board.

  • Copy the entire screen: <PrintScreen>

  • Copy the active window: <Alt-PrintScreen>

2) Modify

Any photo editor can be used to crop and mark up the image. Even Paint will work. Use ctrl-v to paste the screenshot into the program. Then crop the image to remove any extraneous information.

3) Send

Some applications will allow images to be pasted from the clipboard, others will require that the image be saved to a file.

  • Copy-Paste: Many modern applications will allow you to past a picture from the clipboard. Some examples include our chat support widget, and Gmail. If your application supports this, then just copy the final image from the Modify step above and paste it into the application.

  • Save to file: Use the save tool in the program used in the Modify step. Select and easy to locate file location and save a s .jpg or .png. Other formats may have portability limitations. The image file can then be attached and sent as needed.

Be aware that some programs may intercept a screenshot. For instance, Dropbox or OneDrive, will automatically notice when you press <PrintScreen> or <Alt-PrintScreen> and directly save the image as a .jpg/.png to a specified folder.

Other options

Instead of using <PrintScreen> or <Alt-PrintScreen>, you can use the Windows Snipping Tool or install special screenshot software like "Screenshot Captor" or "Lightshot". These options might be good for the following:

  • Selectable-area screenshots

  • Screenshots where the whole image does not fit on the monitor

Mac OS X

The Grab application works well.
